Going into schools with a story to tell

Great Open Door is a group of people drawn from local churches who want to serve the schools in Harlow and the surrounding area by providing Christian assemblies and teaching Religious Education.  We have a comprehensive safeguarding policy and all have DBS enhanced disclosure.

Great Open Door is a Scripture Union Mission Partner.

The name ‘Great Open Door’ is taken from the ministry’s calling verse –  ‘A great door for effective work has opened to me.’   (1 Corinthians 16 vs 9)

Aiming to teach Harlow school children the Christian faith

We aim to teach Harlow school children the Christian Faith and Christian moral values in a relevant way, so that they can make an informed choice about belief in God and following His Son, Jesus Christ.

With 97% of children getting all of their Bible knowledge from school the teams relish the opportunity to present the Christian faith as Christians.

Aiming to enrich the children’s learning experience

We aim to enrich the children’s learning experience and be exceptional. And we do not charge any fee for our work.  The Great Open Door Schools Ministry is based in Harlow, Essex, and currently supports around 18 local infant, primary and junior schools with assemblies, literacy lessons and workshops.

Delivering assemblies and lessons

The 1988 Education Act states that daily collective acts of worship (commonly called assemblies) should take place in school and should be ‘wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian character’.  This is where Great Open Door can help.

Great Open Door began delivering assemblies in September 2003.  This was followed by Literacy lessons in 2005, Workshops in 2011 and Prayer Spaces in 2012.  Over the years Great Open Door has developed good relationships with head teachers, teaching staff and children, who eagerly look forward to their visits. The most recent assembly on the theme of thankfulness was delivered into 18 primary schools. A head teacher subsequently wrote to say that the children left this assembly ‘excited and motivated’ which is just what we want to achieve.

Great Open Door is funded by local Christians and makes no charge for the services and resources it provides to schools.
