Volunteering at Great Open Door

Do you love Jesus?  Are you passionate about working with children? Scripture Union have found that 95% of children do not attend church.  Here at Great Open Door, we have an exciting opportunity for you to help share the love of Jesus with those children through schools ministry.

We will provide training for each of the roles described.  We endeavour to help our team members to develop their skills and build their confidence.

To volunteer for our schools teams you need a valid Enhanced DBS registered on the update service or to be able to apply for one through Great Open Door.

SCHOOL ASSEMBLIES

Every week, we deliver our 45 minute Flagship Assemblies to schools in Harlow and the surrounding areas.  We debunk the myth that Christianity is boring by bringing Bible stories vividly to life.

Our assembly team consists of people who have experience in drama, singing, dance and puppets, as well as people who had no prior experience apart from having a heart for schools ministry.  We help our volunteers to grow in confidence, by writing parts that match their skills and then encouraging them to step out of their comfort zone to develop these skills further.

We have found that children really engage with puppets, so are always looking for people interested in learning how to become a puppeteer (training provided).

Most of our assemblies take place on a Tuesday morning, however as our ministry grows we are increasingly putting on two assemblies a week, allowing opportunities for those with limited availability to share roles with other members of the team.  We normally require our assembly team to be available before the assembly for set up and afterwards for pack down.  We also like to spend time together praying before and after an assembly, however we understand this isn’t always possible, especially if you are a parent and have to drop off/pick up your children from school.

If you think the assemblies’ team might be for you, we would love to arrange for you to see one in action!

SCHOOL LESSONS

Lessons are a great way to tell the children more about the Christian faith and answer any questions that they may have. All of our lessons are very interactive and aim to cater for all learners, combining the Bible with drama, games, media and, in some of the lessons, puppets.  Being on the lessons team is a great option if you are passionate about sharing God’s love with children but might not be able to commit to volunteering regularly, as lesson times vary based on school bookings.

We currently offer to schools:

  • Bible-based English lessons
  • RE lessons
    Seasonal lessons
  • Its Your Move lessons

A Lessons Team volunteer will be encouraged to take an active part in the lesson, this may involve handing out resources, joining a group of children for a discussion, helping children take part in drama, being in the drama, answering questions or even leading parts of the sessions.

Before we take a lesson into school, the person leading the lesson will meet with the rest of the team to talk them through the plan and discuss each person’s role in the lesson.  By having this discussion we hope to equip volunteers and help them grow in confidence by offering them roles they may not have taken on before.
